In the weeks after 9/11, a lonely stump of a Callery pear tree was found buried among the rubble. It was moved to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY, and nursed back to life. The survivor tree was later relocated to the 9/11 Memorial, where it flourishes today. "I was honored with the opportunity to cut a flower from the tree, cast from it, and create a collection of "Survivor Tree" jewelry." - Michael Michaud
